CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

CALLEN

May 4th, 2018

Jamie throws the door open and greets me with eyes narrowed and a suspicious look on her face. “It better not be wrinkled or ripped or abused in any way.”

Ladies and gentlemen, my thanks for doing a good deed…

After snatching the plastic, shop-issued garment bag from my hands, she tears it to oblivion as she yanks Derek’s suit out.

“You know, the garment bag is designed to protect the garments and you just tore it up like an animal,” I point out, receiving only a sly smirk in response. “I wouldn’t mind so much if you hadn’t just looked at me like I was the one who was going to somehow ruin your fiancé’s suit before the wedding.”

Inspecting each article of clothing and making sure everything is accounted for, Jamie ignores me as I kick my shoes off and come the rest of the way inside their apartment.

It’s only when I look around the room for Derek, in my attempt to find someone sane to communicate with, that I notice Tee sitting on the couch.

Her feet are propped up on the coffee table, laptop situated across her thighs. She’s focused on the screen like she’s never seen a computer before, and instinct tells me it’s more about avoiding my arrival than being immersed in whatever she’s working on.

But apart from the obvious evasion in her body language, all I’m reading is how fucking good she looks in those tight jeans she’s got on, paired with a shirt that subtly shows off an area of her body I definitely shouldn’t be looking at.

Forcing my eyes up and away from the distraction of her curves doesn’t help much either. Because then all I see is long luscious hair, flawless skin, and some shimmery stuff on her eyelids that makes her already pretty brown eyes pop even more than usual. Fucking hell…

Has she always been this beautiful or is my mind just playing tricks on me because I can’t have her?

Torment slashes through my chest. I’m not sure how I’m supposed to proceed here, but since I can’t just ignore her, I clear my throat and go for the universal standby.

“Hey, Tee…”

Her head floats up and her eyes meet mine, looking as tortured as I feel right now. “Hi.” She acknowledges me with a quick nod before shutting her laptop and jumping to her feet. “I’m gonna go check on Cora,” she says to Jamie, the words rushing out as she bolts down the hallway toward the bedrooms.

When I’m done watching her leave like the stalker I am, I turn to find Jamie staring me down from the kitchen doorway.

“You big dummy,” she says, irritation pouring out of her mouth on a sigh. “What did you do this time?”

I scrub a hand over my mouth and head into the kitchen. “What did she tell you?”

“She didn’t tell me anything,” Jamie answers. “She’s never overly descriptive when it comes to you, Cal. But I know something happened. The two of you were sneaking around on my bridal shower and now you’re barely making eye contact.
